There are very few modern parenting books that agree with spanking as a tool for disciplining children. Most books either condemn the practice or else recommend corporal punishment as a last resort while glossing over the details of how to properly apply this form of child discipline. However, in 1925 things were different. Although many authors were trying to develop "new" techniques to sell books, spanking was still the main form of punishment in most households. As a result, children in general were more respectful and obedient, usually growing up to cherish their parents for teaching them good moral values. Of course the children of such strict parents often grew up affluent, each generation more successful than the one before (as opposed to nowadays), and they bought many books from authors who thought there was nothing more to say about corporal punishment, which had been around for as long as people have had babies. Many new parents turned to these books espousing new methods of child rearing such as "gentle discipline", hoping to avoid the most unpleasant aspects of raising children. The child-centered home has defined modern parenting books and hence the child rearing philosophies in the majority of American households. Mariam Frederick was a governess in the early 1900s who helped rear and train hundreds of children. After trying many "modern methods" of raising children and finding the results disappointing, Frederick became an outspoken proponent of traditional parenting which had been proven time and again since Biblical times. Although corporal punishment seems like a simple concept, Frederick had a lot to say about the subject. Parents back then, much as they are today, were often divided over what constituted a "spanking." Frederick goes into great detail about when to spank, how to properly spank, why spanking works, and common mistakes parents make when disciplining their children.This item would make a great Mother's Day gift for any Mom looking for a very firm and practical approach to rearing happy and obedient children.
